Day 150 – Mama Mistique

i think it’s time to start a dialog on why very few women can become very successful in Hip Hop. I’ve read articles saying things like female artists are more expensive to maintain and women want to have children and this slows down the progress. What I see that stands out to me is that we don’t value the female voice or contribution to Hip Hop. I’ve noted this before in earlier posts. But if you look at the situation a little closer you can see that the only successful maintsream female rappers are hyper sexualized. We don’t care what they have to say and as a matter of fact a lot of them don’t get the opportunity to write their own lyrics so even when we’re hearing them we’re not really hearing THEM. Obviously, woman have something different to offer Hip Hop than men do. We have a totaly different perspective to speak from but it looks like no one cares. Looks can be deceiving though.

Here’s an MC with a track from 1997. Mama Mistique.
